In new works such as Training Wheels, 2024 Riley preserves photographs from childhood in woven form as a way of relating to the person reflected, while actively avoiding the indulgence and natural urge to forget the reality of yesterday or tomorrow. Weaving in such an intimate scale, only slightly larger than their 35mm printed size, Riley recreates the photos with the abstraction of tapestry, blurring the details and simplifying them down to their essence.
