A NON-GOVERNMENTAL ASSESSMENT OF U.S. HOSTAGE POLICY AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT

SEPTEMBER 18, 2025

On September 18, 2025, in an online event, the Foley Foundation will share our latest independent, nonpartisan research assessing the effectiveness of the government’s policy and responses to the hostage-taking and wrongful detention of U.S. nationals including support to captives’ family members.

Continuing our seven-year groundbreaking Bringing Americans Home research series, Foley Foundation Director of Research and Hostage Advocacy, Elizabeth Richards, will present an overview of our latest findings and recommendations based on confidential interviews with family members of American nationals unjustly held captive abroad, government officials, and subject matter experts. Then, a panel featuring a third-party hostage negotiator, current federal official, and former hostage family member will explore the report’s implications. Policymakers, including members of Congress, will also share remarks.
