Kaiden was diagnosed with a very rare case of Ewings Sarcoma of the skull base (clivis bone) and mets to the lungs at three years old. Due to the primary location, doctors could not find a similar case in literature and were unsure on a treatment plan. Surgery was quite dangerous given the location and we were med flighted to Children's Hospital of Pittsburg to have the only pediatric neurologists (Dr. Elizabeth Tyler-Kabara) in the US at the time that was qualified to complete skull base procedures on children just to have a biopsy completed. It was a scary time for all of us and the diagnosis didn't ease or worries. Kaiden underwent 17 chemotherapy treatments, 31 proton beam radiation treatments to the skull base, proton beam radiation treatments to both full lungs, and an autologous stem cell transplant. Thankfully, he is now more than 10 years from his initial cancer diagnosis and remains cancer free. He now suffers from many long/late term effects of cancer treatments that will affect him for the remainder of his life. We continue to be thankful for his survival and are so appreciative to his amazing oncology team that pulled us all through his long treatments. We still believe that better more advanced therapies that aim at not only eradicating cancers, but lessening long/late term health problems are greatly needed for our children. We will only get there by research!
