In 1995 I had the opportunity to teach a summer course at Hilltop Artists in Tacoma, Washington. I took my then 6-month old daughter with me, and put her in a play pen in the classroom while I worked with the students. They were inspiring! Often the were so excited to blow glass that I would find them sitting in front of the door at 7:30 a.m., waiting for me to arrive and unlock the shop. That is what this program does for youth. In the summer they were up early and ready to work hard.
Glassblowing requires patience, skill, teamwork, focus and dedication. All great qualities for students to carry on in their lives, whether they stay in the arts or embark on other careers. Many of those students I met over 25+ years ago are still my friends. I firmly believe the opportunities that being involved with caring, supportive people, and being allowed to play with fire, literally, helped to teach them to problem-solve, stay focused and try and try again.
Over the years Hilltop Artists have supported me in my various projects. The quality of artist that they grow never ceases to amaze me, and the generosity of this institution is unsurpassed. I truly feel supported when I walk through those doors. On one particular project, I wasn't sure if we'd be able to make our quota. One of the students just said, "Don't worry Diane, we've got you." I am tearing up right now typing this. That is some crazy-great support!
Please help me reach by goal for this fabulous institution. More than ever, Hilltop artists needs your support.
Thank you!
