It wasn’t until later in life that the rescue bug bit me — but when it did, it bit hard.

In 2021, my wife, Helga, and I made a simple but life-changing decision: we adopted our first rescue pup, Molly. She was an unwanted, fluffy black puppy — the kind too many people overlook. But from the moment we brought her home, something shifted in us.

We realized the quiet power of opening your heart to an animal in need. And what we didn’t expect was that this one small act would lead us to a whole new family — the team at Animal Harbor.

Since then, Animal Harbor has become part of the fabric of our lives. I started walking dogs as a volunteer, just trying to give a little back. But the passion of the staff and volunteers was contagious — and when I shared ideas, they didn’t just listen, they welcomed me into the mission.

That walk turned into board service. That board seat turned into friendships. And today, I have the honor of fundraising as part of the Beyond the Bone campaign — because I’ve seen firsthand what this shelter means to this community.

Here’s something I learned that surprised me:
Animal Harbor exists because of a small, scrappy group of people who refuse to let animals fall through the cracks.

They receive no local or state government funding. No national support.
They rely entirely on us — the community that really cares about animals.

This year, Animal Harbor’s goal is to provide comprehensive care and housing for 300 rescued animals. And right now, every donation is matched, which means your impact is doubled.
