From Kathy: Creating a Kinder World, One Child and One Animal at a Time

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my work as a school counselor, it’s this:
Kindness must be taught — and it must be shown.

I’m proud to serve on the board of Animal Harbor and lead our Education Committee. But more than titles or roles, I’m a person who believes deeply that compassion creates change — and that the way we treat animals says a lot about the heart of a community.

That’s why I’ve joined the Beyond the Bone campaign — to help raise the resources Animal Harbor needs to care for 300 animals this year, and to help grow the message we share with the next generation.

I’ve always felt a deep connection to both animals and children — and I’ve seen firsthand how these two parts of our world can come together in powerful ways. Teaching kids how to care for and respect animals isn’t just about animal welfare — it’s about creating a culture of empathy, responsibility, and nonviolence that ripples through families, classrooms, and communities.

When a child learns to be gentle with a kitten, they’re learning to be gentle with themselves.
When a child sees an injured dog get help and healing, they learn that all beings deserve a second chance.

That’s what Animal Harbor does. We don’t just rescue animals — we teach what it means to care.
