Kathryn's journey with cancer began unexpectedly in November following a fall while playing outside. After noticing a bump on her hand, the doctor initially suspected a hairline fracture, and we treated it as such. However, as weeks passed, the bump persisted and even seemed to grow, leading to the decision to have it removed due to the discomfort it was causing Kathryn.
Despite assurances that the likelihood of cancer was extremely small, we received a call on February 23, 2021, informing us that the pathology results were concerning. That afternoon, the surgeon confirmed it was Ewing’s Sarcoma. After 8 months of intensive chemotherapy and a finger amputation, Kathryn finished treatment for Ewing’s. She has been NED (No Evidence of Disease) since that time (October 30, 2021). Kathryn is looking forward to starting the third-grade next fall. Her interests include working hard in school, playing with friends, doting on her little brother, and exploring her creativity through art and music.
In addition to the financial support provided by Angels Among Us, we have been given the invaluable gift of a community of individuals who share the experience of pediatric cancer. The support received through their programs, such as Women's Recharge, Kids Link, Men's Recharge, and Family Events, has been essential to our survival and healing as a family from this traumatic experience.
