Our journey with cancer was like everyone else's, starting with the devastating call telling us our son Brooks had cancer in May of 2020. He was 2 and a half at the time, the middle child of 3 boys. We didnt have time to think, plan, or even process really because we started treatment 2 days later. We spent weeks at a time at Children's Hospital going through chemotherapy, both inpatient and outpatient, all while trying to maintain some sort of "normalcy" for the other two boys in the middle of a pandemic. We are so fortunate to live in Omaha and have Children's here, because even on the days we were home, things can be scary and take a turn so quickly. We were almost done with treatment when our doctor told us they figured out why Brooks got cancer- something everyone wants to know. Unfortunately for us, it was a genetic disorder that is extremely rare and he would have to get a Bone Marrow Transplant in order to fully recover. Not only that, there was a very good chance our other boys had it too. We got Brooks brothers tested and Jace, our oldest son also had the genetic disorder and although he was healthy, he would have to go through a Bone Marrow Transplant as well since the survival rate for this was very slim. Both boys went through BMT's at Nebraska Medicine in the fall of 2020. Brooks recovered and Jace (4) passed away due to complications in the Spring of 2021. 

Angels Among Us helped our family in hard times, no questions asked. They took over our Children's Hospital bill for the length of Brooks treatment, which was a huge relief since we had medical bills coming in from every direction. We have since partnered with Angels Among us and donate money that we raise at an annual golf tournament honoring Jace. We are grateful for the opportunity to help support other AAU families the way they have supported us.
