Sergeant Major (Ret.) Kevin Bittenbender served in the U.S. Army for 34 years, including multiple combat deployments. His military honors include the Bronze Star Medal, Combat Action Badge, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Medal.
As a result of combat service and burn pit exposure, SGM Bittenbender underwent multiple surgeries that ultimately led to the amputation of his left leg. Today, he continues to serve others through sport and advocacy. He coaches with the U.S. Paralympic Nordic/Biathlon Team and recently coached at the Invictus Games in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is also an active endurance athlete, participating in running, cross-country skiing, handcycling marathons, skeleton, and bobsled competitions.
In addition, SGM Bittenbender serves as Director of Military Affairs for Pocono Raceway, where he works with NASCAR to support veterans, military families, and Gold Star organizations. He is also on the Board of Directors for Tuesday’s Promise.
Most importantly, SGM Bittenbender is a survivor of suicide. He credits a simple phone call from someone checking in on him with saving his life. Through this challenge, he hopes to inspire others to make that same life-changing connection.
