Take the Bittenbender Challenge!

In honor of 25 years since September 11, 2001, Mental Health Awareness Month and Military Appreciation Month, Sergeant Major Kevin Bittenbender, Board Director at Tuesday's Children, is challenging YOU to join the team and take the challenge. Connection is one of the most effective ways to combat isolation. A simple conversation can remind someone they are valued, supported, and not alone. Your call might change a life or save one.

1. Become a Challenger

SGM Bittenbender's mantra is "Live a Life Worthy of Their Sacrifice". Paying it forward is a daily practice for him, whether on the marathon course, luge track, mentoring fellow amputees, or running military affairs at Pocono Raceway. Taking the Bittenbender Challenge means you, too, are committing to paying it forward.

Once you register, you have the option to create your own fundraising page.

2. Take on the Challenge

Over the next month, reach out to 22 people in your world to check in on them. Connection is the key to combating isolation and your phone call can make the difference!

Why? PTSD, trauma, survivor's guilt and other mental health affects from 9/11 and military service can be compounded by isolation. In 2022, a study reported than an average of 17.5 veterans died by suicide every day. This is already down from 22 per day in 2010 - support and connections make a difference.

Suicide accounts for 25% of the family loss circumstances among military families in the Tuesday's Children community.

3. Share the Challenge

Share the Bittenbender Challenge with your network and encourage them to join or donate to your challenge page!

For every person who joins, our reach is multiplied by 22 - That's 22 lives changed and continued support for those impacted by 9/11 and military service.

Once you register, you will unlock sharing options for email and social media.

About SGM Kevin Bittenbender

Sergeant Major (Ret.) Kevin Bittenbender served in the U.S. Army for 34 years, including multiple combat deployments. His military honors include the Bronze Star Medal, Combat Action Badge, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Medal.

As a result of combat service and burn pit exposure, SGM Bittenbender underwent multiple surgeries that ultimately led to the amputation of his left leg. Today, he continues to serve others through sport and advocacy. He coaches with the U.S. Paralympic Nordic/Biathlon Team and recently coached at the Invictus Games in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is also an active endurance athlete, participating in running, cross-country skiing, handcycling marathons, skeleton, and bobsled competitions.

In addition, SGM Bittenbender serves as Director of Military Affairs for Pocono Raceway, where he works with NASCAR to support veterans, military families, and Gold Star organizations.  He is also on the Board of Directors for Tuesday’s Promise.

Most importantly, SGM Bittenbender is a survivor of suicide. He credits a simple phone call from someone checking in on him with saving his life. Through this challenge, he hopes to inspire others to make that same life-changing connection.
