Aug. 24, 2016 was one of the best and worst days of my life: The best because it was the day I finally became a mother and met my son, John. The worst because John was born with a previously undetected rare genetic syndrome with no prognosis.
During the last seven years, John has been through more than most children his age: four surgeries before the age of two, multiple hospitalizations, thousands of doctor’s visits. We have learned a lot about him along the way, including that he has multiple diagnoses beyond his syndrome, including autism. I also have learned that, despite parents and caregivers doing everything in their power to get their children the assistance, education, and medical help they need, there are years-long waitlists, insurance companies to contend with, expensive necessities - including formula, therapy, and out of pocket costs - and endless battles for inclusion, understanding, and acceptance. This has motivated me to challenge myself and others to help make a difference: it shouldn't be this way - we need to help the people who need it most, and organizations like the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation are helping people with autism live empowered, productive, and happy lives.
So that brings me here: I am doing two huge things: raising $8,000 for the Flutie Foundation, and running a marathon! Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would run 26.2 miles, but my motivation and desire to make a difference will carry me through.
