Help me Support the Boston Cyclist's Union
For the fourth year, I will be biking from Boston to Montreal to raise money for the Boston Cyclist's Union. The BCU is a non-profit organization that advocates for cyclists and safe biking infrastructure.
Better bike infrstructure isn't just good for cyclists, it's good for pedestrians and neighborhoods too. In urban areas, over 50% of trips taken by resudents are typically under 6 miles - distances that are easily walked or cycled. This is not always possible, however, if there are no sidewalks or a shoulder large enough to ride on. Reducing cars on the road for short trips like this reduces emissions, congestion, and parking woes, ultimately benefiting everyone.
Safer infrastructure is also a question of equity: when a new, protected bike lane goes up, it's likely to be in a wealthier neighborhood, despite the fact that those most likely to cycle daily include those from low income households and people of color. Traffic fatalities at the cyclist and pedestrian level also occur more often in low-income neighborhoods. Bike shares can remove an economic barrier but these are most often concentrated in downtown areas, and do not extend to further neighbors, thereby leaving a huge part of the population underserved.
Your donations help the BCU advocate for safer streets for cyclists and pedestrians, and bridge the economic gap that exists between many people and the ability to bike.
Biking Internationally!
When I was in Switzerland, we rented bikes for a day and rode 30 miles up the coast of Lake Lucerne. We rode mostly on protected, separated bike lanes and were able to easily take our bikes back on the regional train service. It was a beautiful way to see the towns around Lake Lucerne and I would love to see that level of bike infrastructure in more places in the US!
Bike for Charity!
I took part in Bikes Not Bombs' bike-a-thon this year, biking 35 miles to raise money for their organization.
Bike for Ice Cream!
Biking has brought so many amazing people into my life. There is so much joy in biking as a group and discovering new parts of your state.
Bike to the Cape!
Last summer, a group of us biked from Boston to Provincetown, via the Hull ferry. We camper overnight at Sandwich and took the ferry back to Boston from Provincetown. It was the best way to see parts of the Cape I'd only seen from a car, and was such an affirming experience.
No protected bike lanes? Thumbs down!
The face I make when I learn that the new street redesign doesn't have plans for a bike lane. Not only do bike lanes reduce traffic fatalities for pedestrians AND cyclists, they can generate an economic boost for areas previously only accessible by car. Construction project carried out in Montreal, Amsterdam and even here in Cambridge show that if you build the infrastructure, people will use it!
