This May, I’ll be travelling from Boston to Montreal by bicycle, covering approximately 400 miles and 16,000 feet of elevation, to support the Boston Cyclists Union (BCU). As part of this journey, I’ve pledged to raise $1,900 before the ride. (Check out the donation incentives below!)

I've always ridden a bike, but only in recent years have I identified as a cyclist. As I gained confidence riding regularly, I discovered the joy of traveling under my own power. Yet, I’ve also come to recognize the challenges that come with cycling, both as a cyclist sharing the road with cars and, seemingly, as a driver sharing the road with cyclists. I’ve faced my share of hostility simply for navigating gaps in incomplete bike infrastructure. These experiences, along with my belief that people of all ability and mobility levels should feel safe and comfortable choosing alternatives to car travel, led me to the BCU.

The BCU plays a vital role in advocating for policies that make our roads and public spaces safer, not just for cyclists, but for all vulnerable road users. Their work supports planning efforts that protect everyone, from children and road workers to motorcyclists, pedestrians, and mobility device users. Notably, they successfully lobbied for protected bike lanes on the Mass Ave Bridge. Since then, it has seen a 51% increase in bike traffic, reaching nearly 6,200 bikes per day. Each of these bikes represents a potential car that would have added to congestion or a rider who, without safe infrastructure, would have faced greater risk navigating traffic.

This past year, I took part in the inaugural Ride for Your Life, a memorial ride held in observance of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. The ride concluded with a rally at the statehouse, where community members shared powerful stories of loss and the devastating impact of traffic violence. Their words were deeply moving, as was the overwhelming display of support and determination to drive the change needed to prevent future tragedies.

Improvements that the BCU advocate for save lives and help make our cities and towns safer, cleaner, and greener.
