Anyone who knows me knows I love bicycles...

I didn't really find my people as an adult until bicycles. I met the love of my life in a bike shop. We got engaged in a bike shop. I've spent some of the best days of my life on a bicycle and fixing them.

Why this? Why Now?

I'd like to shout from the rooftops my gratitde for the work of this organization! Their cycing infrastructure advocacy and education programs have made existence as a daily cyclist better in every way. This is the first year I have been able to support in this way -- I've been looking forward to this for years!

How it started...

I started bicycle communiting in 2007. At that point I lived in Cambridge, which had a few bike lanes, and commuted to Boston. I moved from Cambridge to Waltham, each day taking my life into my hands because no one bothered to spend public money on people like me. People on bikes. I was housing insecure and most definitely could not afford a car. Later, I moved to Somerville. 

Over these years, cyclists died in places I rode every day: at my school, Boston University. In Inman Square, where I went through every day on my way to work. In Porter Square, also on my way to work. It goes on, you get the picture.

It has never escaped my mind that any one of these people could have been me. How much must we pay in blood and tears to be accepted and supported? And I wasn't even an activist yet. I was just a person who was trying to get to work at times and places unsupported by other kinds of public transit, and the expense of a car was far beyond my reach.

As the years have unfolded, it has been the work of the Boston Cyclist Union that has made the changes and infrastructure available for more people to ride safely, including me.
