I became interested in business at a young age. One of those learning experiences came from participating in a Junior Achievement program in high school. We formed a company and sold "stock" to raise capital. Our company's purpose was to host a Battle of the Bands concert at our school. We were to charge an entrance fee and the proceeds were to cover our costs. Any leftover money was to be used to pay a dividend to our shareholders.
After enlisting the help of our local musicians, we secured a venue, advertised, hired security, and luckily had our city youth program co-sponsor the event so we could have liability protection.
The event was a success. We paid dividends to our stockholders and the look on our their face was priceless. People complained why person XX received a majority of the proceeds and we explained because person XX bought a majority of the stock. It didn't go to the person who worked the hardest, it went to those who invested in the company knowing there was a possibility they would not get their money back.
These were lessons I learned early on and it would not have occured without a program like Junior Achievement. Please help me in supporting Junior Achievement.
