Dr. Stanley and Pearl Goodman’s journey from Brooklyn, New York, to becoming pillars of the South Florida community is one of service, philanthropy and cultural enrichment. Stanley, a graduate of Columbia University and Downstate Medical Center, and Pearl, a Brooklyn College alumna, married in 1953.
Stanley’s Air Force service brought them to various parts of the U.S., however, it was the Goodman’s move to Florida in 1962 that marked the beginning of their lasting impact. They made Fort Lauderdale their home and became early members of Temple Emanu-El, where Stanley served as president before its merger with Temple Kol Ami. Pearl’s early career as a teacher later transformed into a successful path in real estate.
In 2002, they joined the board of Jewish Family Services of Broward County, strengthening their commitment to the organization. In 2009, they established the Dr. Stanley and Pearl Goodman Tree of Life, raising over $100,000. And in appreciation for their generous endowment made in 2014, the agency officially renamed itself Dr. Stanley and Pearl Goodman Jewish Family Services of Broward County, Inc., also known as Goodman JFS of Broward.
The Goodmans have extended their generosity across nearly six decades, supporting organizations such as the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Funding Arts Broward, Florida Grand Opera, and Posnack Day School, among many others. Notably, their passion for Latin American art, rooted in its storytelling and social themes, began in the 1980s. Their collection, a promised gift to the NSU Art Museum, features over 90 masterpieces by renowned artists such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. The museum honors their contributions through the Pearl and Stanley Goodman Study Center and an annual lecture series bearing their names.
Their desire to give back is carried forward through their enduring contributions and their desire to instill in their children and grandchildren, of whom they are very proud, the same desire to give back to the community.
