Back to school was my favorite time of year: choosing the first-day-of-school outfit, the freshness of new notebooks, the excitement of receiving your schedule to see which friends are in your classes.

But back to school means something very different to me now. Not everyone enjoys the same undercurrent of anticipation and excitement. Not everyone gets a new outfit or new notebooks. We say education is a right, but treat it like a privilege.

The real privilege is working at Byte Back. Our students persevere through violence and addiction, homelessness and tragedy. They fight to not be left behind. They enter school in middle-age and work two jobs and raise their families. They break the cycle of poverty. The privilege is working with these superstars who say, "I deserve an education."

With our training, Byte Back students are not only moving into life-changing careers, but they're able to, for the first time for many, fully participate in today's digital society and economy.  Last year, Byte Back had over 750 enrollments and helped our graduates find new jobs making over $24,000 more annually, on average.
