About CARE

The mission of Chatham Animal Rescue & Education (CARE) is to promote the health and safety of all dogs and cats in Chatham County, NC.  CARE is a volunteer-based, donor-funded, 501(c)3 nonprofit animal rescue organization that has served the community since 1975. CARE works with the Chatham County Animal Shelter to save the lives of unwanted cats and dogs, manages feral cat colonies, offers spay/neuter vouchers to lower income families, and serves as an educational resource.

CARE foster caregivers provide loving, stable homes to homeless cats and dogs, helping them become the best possible pets for their future forever families.  In 2018, CARE was able to take in and find homes for more than 120 dogs and cats, most of whom would otherwise have been euthanized without the dedicated help of our donors and volunteers.  In 2019, we've found homes for more than 82 cats and 47 dogs to date.

CARE's education program teaches young children about the importance of pet responsibility, thereby developing and empowering the next generation of animal advocates. CARE’s Lillie's Fund is a targeted spay/neuter program, subsidizing sterilization surgeries for pets owned by lower income families in Chatham County.  In 2018, CARE fixed more than 500 dogs and cats, and we are on track to exceed that number in 2019. All of this would not be possible without the generosity of donors like you!
