Youth and Government Program

The YMCA has been a constant pillar in my life since I was 12 years old. While you could find frequently find me at the Y’s afterschool program or summer camp, the catalyst to my YMCA involvement was my participation in the Youth and Government Program.

Youth and Government is a nationwide program for middle and high school teens to participate in a state-organized, mock government. Students gather at their state capitol and assume the role of legislators, judges, attorneys, lobbyists, and members of the press. The program engages thousands of students each year.

I first joined Youth and Government as an eighth-grade student and quickly found my niche. Youth and Government allowed me to hone my critical thinking skills, find my voice, and spark a long-time interest in government and politics. In 2011, I was named New York State Youth Governor and later served as a Presiding Officer at the Conference On National Affairs (CONA) in Black Mountain, NC in 2013. I continued to volunteer with the program on the local, state, and national levels, including at YMCA of the USA’s Youth Governors Conference in Washington, DC each summer. The opportunities and the friendships this program has afforded me over the years are truly invaluable.

As a member of the Guilderland YMCA Advisory Council, I hope to provide opportunities for more young people to learn about the principles of democratic government through the practice of servant leadership right here in the Capital Region.

This weekend marks the 88th annual New York State YMCA Youth and Government Conference in Albany. Nearly 700 high school students will take over the State Capitol to debate issues, propose legislation, and immerse themselves in experiential civic engagement.

My Youth and Government experience would not have been possible without the generous support of donors, like you. I've surpassed my original goal to raise $1,000 and am now trying to fundraise $2,500 by the time the state conference concludes on Sunday, March 24. Every $250 raised covers the program fee for one high school participant. Please consider contributing to my campaign and ensure democracy will be learned by the next generation.
