This past year has taken a toll on many of us.  After a year of traveling no further than our local grocery store, Olivia and I are vaccinated; ready to break loose and looking to return to somewhat of a normal life.  In an effort to go big or go home, we’ve decided BIG is the way to go and are planning on a cross country road trip… with a bit of a twist, of course.

As many of you may or may not know, Olivia (18 yrs. old) was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease called Phelan-McDermid Syndrome (PMS).  PMS is a genetic disorder caused by deletion of part of chromosome 22 or a defect in a gene called SHANK3. The disorder can cause a wide range of symptoms varying in severity.  To date there are only about 2650 people around the world who share this diagnosis with Olivia.  To help raise awareness and funds for the Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Foundation (visit www.PMSF.org for more info) Olivia and I are hoping to turn our adventure into a fundraiser.  Here’s our plan…

As we travel from Massachusetts to Washington, down the coast of California and then back East again, we hope to connect with family, friends and our extended PMSF family across the country.  Along the way we hope to grab some awesome Phelan Lucky (visit: Facebook @22q13 for more info) photo ops at Niagara Falls, Mt Rushmore, the Grand Canyon and many more.  So how are we turning this into a fundraiser?  Our proposed route is approximately 6,000 miles.  We need YOU to help us cover our milage.  We are hoping to get $2.21 per mile covered so we can reach our goal of $13,260 raised to benefit the Phelan-McDermid Syndrome foundation.  Funds raised help PMSF further research and support the many families like ours.
