I first became involved with the Special Olympics organization by serving as a basketball coach for our local team in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Fast forward several years later, I found myself searching for a volunteer opportunity in Chicago that would not only allow me to make an impact on the local community but to also reconnect with some of the passions and personal interests of childhood that are so often muted in our professional lives. For me, that passion was sports - team-based activities have been an integral part of my life, fostering so many valuable learning opportunities and relationships that will truly last a lifetime. It's a privilege to now be able to facilitate that life experience for the Special Olympics athletes in the Chicago area. While I'm no longer the one on the field, it's equally if not more rewarding to see these children and adults share in the same joy and experiences that firmly shaped my life.

On Sunday, March 5th, I will be participating in the 2023 Chicago Polar Plunge, celebrating more than 20 years of plunging in what is one of our organization's largest fundraisers. Thousands of people raise funds to support the athletes that participate in Special Olympics Chicago/Special Children’s Charities programs, with the fundraising period then culminating in a day-long event where businesses, volunteers and athletes gather in support of the organization and take a dip into Lake Michigan and make one final fundraising push.
