On Sunday, March 3, 2024 I will participate in the 2024 Chicago Polar Plunge for the 7th time! I will jump into Lake Michigan’s chilly waters to support thousands of Chicagoans who participate in Special Olympics Chicago/Special Children’s Charities programs. With your support, people with intellectual disabilities have the opportunity to discover new strengths, abilities, and accomplishments.
For those who know me, my why is simple. This is a cause that I hold near and dear to my heart.
I plunge in memory of my Aunt Dawn. My Aunt was born with Mongolism (now known as Down syndrome). She was given a very short life expectancy due to the holes in her heart. She lived to be 36 years old. She passed away when I was 6, but not before I was able to know her and love her. I then grew up with my family sharing stories of her triumphs and her hardships and the people along the way that taught her to never give up and help her reach her goals.
At a very young age, I decided that I wanted to be that person to someone. So, that's what I did, I went to school for Special Education and made a career of helping people of all ages reach educational and personal goals.
I have volunteered and worked with the Chicago Park District and Special Olympics throughout the last fifteen years. I will continue to support and advocate for all individuals with disabilities.
