In honor of Anna Maria Lo Grande

My mother, Anna Maria Lo Grande was a happy, loving person with an incredible zest for life. She was always smiling and so enthusiastic , no matter what she was doing. My mom was ready to help anyone in need with her constant positivity and encouragement. The word no wasn’t in her vocabulary, as she was always someone you could count on. She brought so much joy to anyone that was lucky enough to be around her. She was married to my dad for 38 years, had 3 daughters, & 4 grandkids who all miss her too much for words.

In December 2015 we noticed she was not acting like her upbeat self- forgetting simple things, staring off into a daze, and slow to respond. During this time she was  taking care of her oldest daughter, Nancy, who was battling breast cancer. We thought maybe she was over worked and exhausted. After taking her to doctor after doctor, she was diagnosed with CJD within 2-3 weeks.

Creutz-feldt Jakob dissed (CJD) is a rapidly progressive, fatal neurodegeneritive disorder. The brain stops functioning and symptoms are similar to dementia like brain disorders , however CJD progress more rapidly and leads to death. There is no way to prevent it and there is no cure.

My mom passed away in March, 2016, 3 short and painful months after she was diagnosed at the age of 58. The whole situation happened so quick. It was extremely painful to see her go from someone who was so happy and energetic, to not being able to speak or remember who you were, to being bed ridden and needing full time care, to eventually passing. One minute she was her, the next gone. One minute we were talking to her (before she was diagnosed), but by the time the doctors figured out she had CJD , it was already too late and she couldn’t respond to us. Her brain was  deteriorating rapidly and there was absolutey nothing anyone could do about it.

This is an extremely rare disease. Worldwide 1-2 cases of CJD are diagnosed per million people each year.

I will be hosting CJD walk in memory of my mother to help raise money for ongoing research , as well as provide services for people and their families who have been affected by this terrible disease.
