Fred Glavan and Lee Gallagher Memorial Research Grant Request
With your support and generosity, we did it in 2021! We reached our $10,000.00 fundraising goal last year in honor of siblings Fred Glavan and Lee Gallagher. This grant was awarded to Dr. Maria Letitia Barraca, who is working to test the effectiveness of a class of drug-like molecules, developed in her lab, to be used as a therapeutic drug in treating inherited CJD. Words cannot thank you enough for your support, but much more needs to be done.
So this year, we are setting our sights even higher with a $20,000.00 goal to fund additional Memorial Research Grants. Please consider joining us to find a cure for neurological prion diseases, including our family’s killer, familial Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD).
Fred Glavan lived by the motto “work hard, play hard.” Work was a means to enable him to spend time enjoying life with his family and friends. Fun times involved all kinds of things from fishing and camping to traveling and filming. Family and friends knew that Fred and his blinding camera light could show up at any time, at any gathering.
Lee Gallagher was a caring and unique person. She was both a career woman and a mother who created the place to hang out for her kids and their friends. Chips, sodas, and her fabulous cookies and desserts, but her dinners were pretty bad. There was a swimming pool, but Lee could not swim, but she did love paddling around in her blow-up chair while reading a book.
We lost Lee in March 1984 and Fred in May 2000 – she was only 51 and he only 64. Our families are contributing both monetarily and scientifically to the research to find a cure. Diseases associated with genetic markers are the new scientific frontier. The CJD Foundation and their support of prion researchers worldwide have made amazing progress to rapidly and accurately diagnose prion disease and put us on the path to a clinical drug trial. Together, we all can make a difference in the lives of many, including our own.
We thank all of you sincerely for your help in this effort,
Marty Glavan, Pat Elliot, and Donna Gallagher
