Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease is one of the most common genetic conditions in the world yet so few people of heard of CMT. You've probably heard of similar conditions like Muscular Dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis or Peripheral Neurpathy, but CMT is still widely unknown, even in the medical field, which makes living with this condition even harder. 

CMT is a progressive nerve disease which leads to muscle wasting. Currently there is no cure or Treatments for CMT at present, however there are ways the condition can be managed through operations(which I've had) , mobility aids (which I have) and foot orthotics (which I also have). 

I inherited the condition from my Dad. Growing up it was always clear my Dad had a disability, but it wasn't until I was diagnosed as a child that my Dad finally found out what it was that was wrong. As years went by, my Dad's condition worsened and he suffered terribly with CMT. Unfortunately my Dad passed away 10 years ago, so he wasn't here to see the fantastic work that the CMT research foundation are doing. They are doing so much research, drug trials and a cure is on the horizon!! 

At the moment, my condition is worsening, I suffer from nerve pain, tremors, muscle wastage, loss of sensation, scoliosis, joint pain and much more. In the near future I will be reliant on a walking stick or wheelchair, and that's something I watched my Dad fight so hard not happen to him, but with my balance worsening, and my legs weakening it may the safest way for me to get around. 

Funding research which will ultimately find a cure has become so much more important to me after becoming a Mum. I'd love to be walking still when she grows up. I want to be as independent as possible and not have to rely on her when she is older. 

So for CMT ACTION MONTH, I am setting myself a goal of doing a 50 mile cycle. I'm hoping to raise as much money as possible so that I can help fund the research into cmt, continue the drug trials that are currently being undertaken and hopefully help the foundation find a cure!
