What do College Mentors do?

For the past two years at Purdue, I've been a college mentor paired with the most amazing little buddies. There's been Noah, Tayon, and now Adelina (pictured in profile avatar). These little buddies are amazing kids with various lifestyles, backgrounds and ambitions but one thing rings true to all of them - they look up to their assigned mentor(s) and work towards building relationships, seeking guidance and insight into college life/ what their lives can look like if they choose to pursue a college degree.

Research shows that kids with mentors view themselves and their futures more positively than those without mentors. Not only do they view themselves in a more confident light, but they also achieve more positive outcomes in school, the workplace, and their communities. We all know that growing up is challenging, but, with a mentor, it’s a little easier. And that’s exactly why I’ve chosen to be volunteer with College Mentors.

College Mentors for Kids connects kids to college students through weekly on-campus activities that inspire growth, confidence, and brighter futures.

I enjoy volunteering because I get to spend time with my little buddy each week and participate in fun activities together with other mentors and buddies. I also enjoy learning alongside my buddy about careers, culture and diversity, and community service. Not only do we like exploring our world together, but my little buddy helps me grow as a person too. This program helps me to give back to my community, and I'm learning important leadership skills in the meantime.

Each year, we have high demand for mentors and sometimes are unable to recruit enough volunteers to cater to the needs of potential little buddies. If it's something you think you can commit to, please consider applying to be a mentor and if not, please consider donating to my fundraiser! I can't do all of this without your support, so please help however you can. Your contribution will allow us to continue this program on our campus so we can spread the power of mentoring.
