During my time at Butler I volunteered as a mentor and in various chapter leadership roles, including chapter president with College Mentors. When I first became involved with College Mentors, it was because I was looking for an opportunity to volunteer on campus. Four years later, as I prepared to graduate from college, my mom's favorite thing to tell people was that I went to college for pre-med and to get a biology degree, but what I really majored in was College Mentors for Kids.
In a publication from College Mentors during my senior year, I said “I wanted to be a doctor because I could work hard and make a difference. Through College Mentors, I discovered the achievement gap in schools and where my heart really is. College Mentors inspired me to change what was my life-long dream. It gave me the determination to go out and achieve it. The tools that I have gained – leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills, how to find and use resources, and how to be an effective communicator – will allow me to be successful.” Looking back to that time, now nine years ago, I am shocked (and pleasantly surprised!) with how accurate my assessment was. College Mentors gave me the opportunity to develop as a leader.
All of those skills that I was so easily able to list back in 2008, along with the igniting of my passion for improving the educational inequities in our schools, have gotten me to where I am today. My College Mentors story began in 2004 on Butler’s campus but it continues today as I serve as the past chair of the Board of Directors for College Mentors for Kids.
A gift from you will allow us to continue to support the work being done on college campuses across the country, for both college students and elementary students. Thanks for your support!
