Mentorship changes lives. Research shows that kids who have mentors are more confident, see more possibilities for their future, and experience better outcomes in school, careers, and their communities. Growing up isn’t easy—but having a mentor makes a real difference.  

College Mentors for Kids connects elementary-age students with college mentors through weekly, on-campus activities that build confidence, encourage curiosity, and expand what kids believe is possible for their future.

Each week, I spend time with my little buddy, Jahlil. Together we flip water bottles, tackle brain games, and talk about our families. Jahlil is a curious, thoughtful kid and a natural critical thinker who loves chess, and I’ve loved watching our conversations and relationship evolve over the past 2 years.

Through this program, kids like Jahlil get to experience college as an exciting, welcoming place, not something intimidating, boring, or out of reach. They hear from student organization leaders, learn about different career paths, and begin to imagine themselves in spaces they may not have otherwise been exposed to. For kids in the Raleigh area, this program opens doors and broadens horizons in a meaningful way.

Volunteering has helped me grow too. Being a mentor has strengthened my leadership skills, deepened my connection to my community, and reminded me how impactful showing up consistently for someone can be.
