Why Does College Mentors Matter to Me?
One of the things I've learned through my schooling is how important having a role model is. Research shows that those with a role model or mentor, view their future positively as opposed to those without mentors. Children who grew up with mentors, have higher confidence, and have more positive outcomes in their adult life. Growing up is hard, but having a mentor makes it a little easier. Mentors give kids someone to talk to, that they can view as a friend. This is why I've chosen to be a part of College Mentors.
College Mentors for Kids allows college students to connect with elementary school kids in the area. Typically, we do weekly on-campus activities, however due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will be doing our weekly activities via zoom. Regardless of how we present these activities, they continue to inspire growth, confidence, and brighter futures.
I have always had a passion for volunteering, in high school I taught in a second grade classroom. This gave me an opportunity to pursue something I loved and better myself for my future. Because of College Mentors I get to spend time with my buddy each week, and be involved in fun activities, with others. We also get to share our stories. Buddies and mentors come from different backgrounds, and we all have something different to share. This program helps me give back to my community, learn the important leadership skills, and help children along the way.
