In my lifetime I have been lucky enough to have several mentors. I often think of my second grade teacher who never gave up on me when I had a hard time learning to read, or my dance coach who put me front and center in my first dance, or my theater coach who inspired me to write my first play.   These people, and many more, helped shape me into the person I am, through their guidance, advice, and simply by the time they spent with me. 

For many years I’ve aspired to become a child life specialist. From personal experience, I know the importance of having someone in your corner during your most vulnerable moments in life and that’s what child life specialists do. When I heard about College Mentors for Kids, the mentorship program at ISU that pairs college students with local elementary school students, I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. I now have the opportunity to get paired with an elementary student and help guide them in life through weekly activities that inspire them to grow and succeed.
