Mike De Rosa Sr. began his military service in 1982, while still in high school, and reported for Basic Training just 13 days after graduating. Over the course of more than 23 years of service, he served around the world, ultimately retiring in 2005 from the U.S. Army’s Special Forces, known as the Green Berets.
Following his military retirement, Mike continued serving overseas as a contractor in Iraq through 2011. In 2012, he was diagnosed with Spinocerebellar Ataxia (SCA), a diagnosis that was later reclassified as Acquired Ataxia in 2019.
Mike has never shied away from a challenge. He continues to push himself through physical events that test his determination, resilience, and strength. Mike's previous hikes include Tirgu Mures, Romania, a portion of the Great Wall of China, desert range in New Mexico, Pike’s Peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, numerous trails in the USA and 9/11 Stair Climb events. This year, he is taking on a new challenge: traveling to Peru to hike and experience the Andes Mountains while exploring the historic routes and challenges faced by the Inca people.
Through this journey, Mike is raising awareness of ataxias and supporting Ataxia Connection’s mission to help individuals and families affected by ataxias. As a North Carolina resident, Mike is dedicating the funds raised through his journey to support North Carolina families living with ataxia. His determination to take on this challenge also reflects his belief that an ataxia diagnosis does not define the limits of what a person can accomplish.
