It has been an honor to be a part of Hearts Need Art for the past several years. I have personally seen, as the chaplain, the smiles and joyful tears from patients who are listening to live music by our musicians or are participating in an art project with our artists or creating a story with our resident writer. For a short period of time the life altering illness a patient is experiencing is put on hold and they become lost in a better space that offers some relief from anxiety and pain. The Hearts Need Art staff and artists are incredible men and women who are working together to create moments of joy for those who are in a very difficult place. Please join me in raising awareness of the benefits of the arts in the healthcare field as well as help me raise funds so this work will continue to grow.

I love Mandalas. There is such a beauty to the symmetry they offer. I can sometimes spend hours coloring them while watching TV or listening to music or to the new Hearts Need Art podcast "Just for the Health of It". We have been encouraged during this Create-a-thon to make our own. Stay tuned for my creation!

The artists of Hearts Need Art are sooooo amazing! I had a great deal of fun coloring this page. I love to color. In 2015 I read an article about the benefits to mental and physical health of adults who colored. There are outstanding coloring books for adults in all types of genres. After having worked in the mental health fields most of my adult life as an educator and a counselor I often suggest this as a way of calming the brain and engaging with the inner quiet within. It works!!

I have a wonderfully creative grandson who loves stories. From the time he was a little guy he would ask me to tell him stories. I always said he had to give me the first line. Off we would go into the world of make believe. Now that he is older we will go for walks in the woods and he will say, "Nene, I'll give you the first line and then I will give the next line." And so it goes...the stories are sometimes funny and sometimes scary, but we always end with some sort of resolution.
