Hearts Need Art is a program that focuses on bringing joy to those who are experiencing life-altering illnesses through creative expression. This includes allowing them resources to express themselves creatively and connecting them to other creative souls as well. When faced with a health crisis, it's easy to focus all attention and efforts on physical healing while ignoring mental and spiritual health. Hearts Need Arts aims to return focus to the human behind the illness, and offer relief from the never ending monotony of life inside of a hospital. I was introduced to the program by my voice instructor Constanza Roeder, who started this organization after her own battle with leukemia at a young age. Her experience compelled her to advocate for others with similar stories, and create room for these individuals to engage in creativity be it musically, artistically, or otherwise. These practices also encourage much-needed connection, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when necessary safety procedure often result in feelings of isolation. Donations to this page provide art kits, writing kits, and virtual support sessions to individuals who are finding themselves stranded amid a pandemic and amid their personal health circumstances.
