Joni Thompson, President Emerita of Our Lady of Tepeyac High School, will be honored with this year’s ¡Creemos! Award in recognition of over three  decades of service and dedication to young women’s education. As the founder of the ¡Creemos! We Believe Benefit for Scholarships 30 years ago, Joni’s vision has helped bolster a financial aid program that continues to open doors for students today. Her leadership has shaped Tepeyac’s culture, strengthened its College Readiness Program, and empowered countless students to pursue their dreams.

A Time of Growth and Change

Throughout her time at Tepeyac, Joni saw the school change in meaningful ways. One of the biggest changes, she says, is the rise of student leadership. “The involvement of older students helps younger students adjust to high school and adds a family feel,” she explains. “The growth of clubs and traditions has made the school more inclusive and welcoming.”
Another major change has been the growth of the College Readiness Program. “It’s really become the backbone of the school,” Joni shares. The program ensures that every student meets with a counselor to discuss their goals and interests. As of 2024, with the program’s support, 44% of Tepeyac students were first-generation high school graduates, and 88% were first-generation college students. Students also get help with FAFSA, take part in events like Coffee and Careers, Career Day, and career panels, and go on several college tours each year. 100% of Tepeyac students have been accepted into college for the past 16 years. Joni credits early grant-writing by teachers for helping the program succeed.

A Passion for Girls' Education

Joni’s commitment to all-girls education comes from personal experience. As an alumna of an all-girls high school–Regina Dominican–she recalls how her teachers gave her the confidence to take risks. That experience shaped her approach at Tepeyac. “Being a strong advocate for young women means spending time with each of them and knowing their stories,” she says.

Her dedication has helped create a school where girls feel supported and encouraged to reach their full potential.

The Impact of ¡Creemos!

In 1995, Joni launched ¡Creemos! as a small gathering of about fifty people at a restaurant on 26th Street. Most attendees were faculty and their families. Today, the benefit has grown into an annual event with over 350 guests. “Without such a successful benefit, we wouldn't have such a strong financial aid program,” she says. Because of the success of the benefit, 98% of Tepeyac students are able to receive financial aid.

For Joni, seeing students at the benefit is one of the most meaningful parts. “It makes a real impact on our guests,” she explains. “Their presence is a reminder of why the event matters.”

Looking Ahead

As Tepeyac nears its 100th anniversary in 2027, Joni hopes the celebration will bring many alumna back to celebrate. “We want to celebrate with those who have walked the hallways. We have a lot to be proud of,” she says.

As this year’s ¡Creemos! Award recipient Joni's influence will be celebrated not only for her years of leadership but also for the lasting impact of her vision—a legacy of opportunity, empowerment, and belief in every Tepeyac student.
