In Memory of Duke

     Duke was born in Tennessee at a puppy mill. He apparently was trucked up to North Shore Animal League. How do we know? He never cared for panel trucks or postal trucks, so we assumed they brought back bad memories. He selected us on the fateful day we met, and he immediately impressed us with his desire to please, his sweet personality and his ability to train quickly. We learned that he was a lover, not a fighter, when it came to women and female dogs. He had too many friends to count, whether in the neighborhood, at the dog park, or with family and friends. He loved a house full of people and loved and protected the grandkids. He loved brunch at the Refuge and swimming at Shinnecock Beach. Simply, he loved his life. When he received a bad diagnosis, he taught us courage, and faith as he continued his life, through much treatment and surgery as if nothing happened.

     Unfortunately, a cure was not meant to be. But he lives on through donations and his human and dog friends who loved him. Our lives are better for knowing him.
