Walter, AKA “Wally” is the newest member of the Walla Walla Fire Department CARES program. Wally is a 3-month-old Golden Retriever that was donated to our program and to us from Bend Oregon. He will serve as our Crisis/Community Engagement Canine. His service will also extend throughout the City of Walla Walla in a peer support and employee wellness capacity. He will be attending training with the eventual goal of being a certified therapy dog. This project is funded by The University of Washington School of Social Work and their BH-CORE (Behavioral Health Crisis Outreach Response Education, Co-Response Fire Innovation Grant. WWFD CARES is one of the few fire departments within Washington State that operates a CARES program and the only one to our knowledge to include a canine program.
