I am a former decent athlete. I love running and competing but have realized that doing these things at my former level is less and less achievable now. While I still run and compete, it looks different now. My competition comes in the form of coaching on a high school football team and playing a lot of board games! Running is through local neighborhoods getting ready for an upcoming race season. I approach these race seasons differently than I used to. I have 2 kids of my own that want and need my attention, I have a football team that needs it (and hopefully wants it sometimes). I've shifted my focus outward as I've gotten older. My son, Logan, has started showing an interest in running and it won't be long before he surpasses any athletic achievement I've ever had. He is an impressive person!
The first time I ran under an autism foundation charity, it was because my sister was studying to treat and provide therapy for kids with autism. Logan was diagnosed with autism a few years ago and has benefited from some of the programs championed by the Flutie Foundation. He is effortlessly smart and unnecessarily athletic. Logan is the sweetest little guy I've ever met. He and his little sister Amelia are joined at the hip on most days. He has a very close group of friends who love him and are patient with him. I get excited when I watch Amelia interact with him and know that she will love and protect him always.
I've watched my wife be mentored by someone who has gone through the same struggles we've had and has in returned shared wisdom and empathy with others as they begin their journey that might look a little different than what had been intended.
I am beyond blessed in my life. Thank you for reading through my rambling. Thank you for considering supporting this great charity and me as I work to achieve this lofty, ridiculous goal of completing the dopey challenge!!
