You see, I have a very special connection to Autism. My 34 year old brother, Joshua has autism. My brother was diagnosed when he was two years old. Even though I never got to see him at prom, never got to see him drive a car, will never get to see him get married or have children, I am beyond blessed to have him as my brother.
He is an amazing bright light in mine and so many other's lives. He is an incredible individual and you would be lucky to know Joshua!
I could go on and on about Josh. He is absolutely hilarious and will make you laugh when you meet him despite him seeming shy at first. He is very passionate about many things in life - some of those are video games, movies, and even Disney!
Before joining Dougie's Team, I have actually never heard of the Flutie Foundation, So, I did some research and found their mission.
Our Mission: To help people and families affected by autism live life to the fullest.
Our Vision: A world where people with autism lead productive lives where they are included, respected, and actively engaged in their communities.
Our Promise: Our programs and activities improve the quality of everyday life for people and families affected by autism along seven key dimensions that are critical to living each day fully. We aim to provide a path for education and/or employment during the day; opportunities for physical and social activity outside of work/school; and the tools to be safe, supported, and informed at all times.
When I read this, I knew this was meant to be!
My mom has worked TIRELESSLY to do this exact same thing with my brother throughout his entire life. My mother, the saint:
-has created a social group for young adults with autism where my brother has met many of his friends, including his girlfriend!
-has advocated for a career for him where he feels valued & engaged. He now works part time at a job that treats him like a king!
-endlessly teaches my brother valuable life lessons that don't come naturally to people with autism. Learning how to cook dinner, pay at restaurants, fly alone in the future, get an uber to take him to the gym...all of these things that come naturally to us!
These type of services & opportunities are invaluable to young adults with autism. I have witnessed it throughout my entire life. Without a doubt, I believe my brother is flourishing because of these programs that are available.
I am proud to be running with Dougie's Team and I hope you will consider donating towards my goals!
