My name is DeAndra Smith. I have been a member since December 2014. Before I came to the Independence Center I went through a rough life. My father was hardly around in my life and my mother physically, mentally and verbally abused me. I was over worked, under paid and underappreciated for all my efforts. I was homeless most of my adult life not knowing where my next chance and opportunity would come from. 

My life completely changed when I became a member of the Independence Center. I actively volunteer my time mainly running the work order day business in the kitchen. I have maintained stability in my life and made new friends along the way. A lot of my life goals I have accomplished. 

In 2018 I was honored with the privilege to represent the Independence Center at Dancing with the St. Louis Stars. It was a very memorable moment. 

My future goals with the aid of the Independence Center is to one open my own restaurant. In doing that I will be self-employed and possibly open doors for other members to have employment opportunities.
