I was asked last summer if I would consider dancing... in public... on a large stage... under bright lights... with all of Spartanburg watching... and even beyond via livestream.

Before I said yes, you won't be surprised to know my first response was, “Show me the books.” If I was going to raise all this money, I needed to know where it goes.

And I was blown away! 

Funds from this event stay right here in Spartanburg (and Cherokee) and provide direct support to local cancer patients — not research, but real, day-to-day needs that insurance often doesn’t cover. Things like wigs, nutritional supplements, fuel cards, wheelchairs, shower seats, and on-site counseling. For many clients, there is no other financial support. These dollars restore a little dignity and comfort at a time when this awful disease has much taken so muchh. 

Cancer has had a direct and dramatic effect on my life and probably yours as well. There’s always one person who becomes your “why.”

Valerie Higgins Smith, my dear friend from Vanderbilt is mine. Liver cancer took her far too soon at age 37, on New Year’s Eve nearly 20 years ago. We watched her decline, and it was heartbreaking. But through it all, Val kept smiling, singing, loving, and laughing like there was no tomorrow — until there wasn’t. And she would absolutely be the first one on that dance floor. Her spirit was contagious.

I’m dancing for Val. And for every family walking this road right now. This is how we can help.
