Why I'm running for the Children's Heart Foundation
Hi, I’m Colm Hughes — I’m 29, from Ireland, and this November I’m running the New York City Marathon alongside my partner to raise $5,000 for the Children’s Heart Foundation.
I was born with a congenital heart defect and had to give up competitive running not long after winning the U13 All-Ireland Cross Country. In 2023, I had open-heart surgery to replace a leaking valve. After a long recovery, another complication appeared, and I needed a second heart surgery in early 2025. While I’m feeling stronger now, I still take daily medication and make lifestyle adjustments.
Training for this marathon feels like both a personal challenge and a celebration of how far I’ve come. I’m proud to support the life-changing research the Children’s Heart Foundation makes possible for kids and families living with congenital heart disease.
If you’re in a position to donate, I’d be truly grateful. Every bit of support means a lot.
