About My Fundraiser
I am raising money for Independent Animal Rescue, which I have been involved with since 2015. I have fostered cats as well as helped with fundraising. IAR is a caring, well-run organization that provides home-based foster care for cats and dogs in North Carolina's Research Triangle, where I have lived since 2011. Foster cats have stayed with me for anywhere from a few days (waiting for a more permanent situation to open up) to several years. As a cat foster, in addition to providing care and socialization for the animals, I do reference checks (personal and veterinary) for adoption applications that are submitted for my fosters. I also conduct home visits to make sure the applicants can provide a safe environment for the animal. When the adoption has been approved, I usually bring the animal to the adopters' home. I also follow up with the new owners after adoption to make sure everything is going OK and to address any issues that might have arisen. IAR will ALWAYS take an animal back if the adoption just doesn't work out, or if the owners' situation changes and they are no longer able to take care of the animal. IAR wants to ensure that "our" animals never end up in a shelter.
Annie
Annie currently lives with me. Her human, who'd had Annie since she was a little kitten, passed last summer. Annie came to live with me soon after. She was a little confused and subdued for the first few months, but now her heart is open and all she wants is to get and give love. Not every rescue group would take a senior kitty like Annie into their foster program, but IAR did. Whether she lives with me the rest of her life or finds a loving forever home with another family, IAR will make sure that Annie will always be loved and cared for. Annie's likes are cat treats, lying on her back, and getting attention from humans. Her only dislike is calorie-restricted diets. (The vet says Annie should lose a little weight. Annie thinks the vet is a quack who must've gotten her "degree" online for $49.99.)
Elma and Millie
Elma and Millie came from the same location and were the same age, so they were probably sisters even though they looked very different. They were definitely BFF's! As the foster parent, I was able to stipulate that they be adopted together. I think shy Millie in particular would've been lost without her much braver sister Elma! The nice lady who adopted them named them Elma and Millie after her favorite aunts.
Maeven
Maeven was rescued by a kind woman who noticed her hanging around her townhome complex. She was very skittish, but day after day the woman put food out and eventually Maeven came to trust her enough that she allowed the woman to touch her. The rest is history! Maeven had obviously been a pet at some point, and it was clear how happy she was to be in a home again. Maeven was adopted by a lovely person who sends me regular updates on how the family is doing. She now has a kitty sister named Lila and an extended human family that spoils her rotten.
Bear
Despite having a real bed and cat scratchers at his disposal, Bear preferred to sharpen his claws and sleep on this flattened cardboard box. Bear was an IAR fospice cat. A "fospice" is a foster animal who is in hospice care. Bear had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). When he came to me, I was told he could drop dead at any minute. But he lived with me for 4-1/2 years! He had oodles of personality and was a very good boy.
Elmer
Elmer was my first foster cat for IAR. He came to me when he was around 6 months old. He was a "friendly feral". He was adopted by a wonderful woman whose house was on a large wooded lot with floor-to-ceiling windows. A bird- and squirrel-watcher's dream! She named him Elmer after her late father-in-law, whom everybody loved. Elmer quickly became a favorite client of the pet sitter his mom used, and even featured in their World Cat Day photo one year.
