"Your Child Has Cancer..."
In the fall of 2006, we heard those terrifying words from the doctors at the VCU Medical Center. Our daughter Mackenzie, age 21 months old, had a brain tumor the size of a peach resting against her brain stem. The tumor was malignant and after 2 surgeries, 7 months of intenstive chemo, and dozens of hospital stays, Mackenzie was declared cancer free.
18 years later, she is finishing up her freshman year at college and majoring in Biology, with a look towards something in medicine down the road. Mack is a graceful, compassionate, and determined 19-year-old who still wants to give back to the Foundation that helped her so much.

The Impact of ASK in Fredericksburg
- 6-7 children are diagnosed with cancer across Virginia every week.
- Over 30 ASK Families on active treatment reside in the Fredericksburg area and surrounding counties.
- Over 20 of those children from the Fredericksburg and surrounding counties travel to Children's Hospital of Richmond for cancer treatment. ASK provides gas and grocery cards to help alleviate the cost.
- $55,847 were given in 2022-2023 to support those families financially.
- 43 days of school are missed in the first year of cancer treatment. In 2022-2023, 262.5 hours were spent tutoring ASK kids to help them stay on schedule.
- Quarterly social events are held for ASK families in the Fredericksburg area to build connections.
- A full week of summer camp is offered in Fredericksburg at no cost to ASK families.
