Since 1984 FriendshipWorks (f/k/a Match-Up Interfaith Volunteers) has matched volunteers in Boston and Brookline with their elderly neighbors free of charge. Volunteers are as young as 18 and as old as 100! It is great for people who just want a friend to do things with sometimes. Volunteer programs include: “friendly visitors” visiting elders in their homes for friendship and support; “medical escorts” who accompany elders on their medical appointments; “PetPals” who visit assisted living facilities with their pets; “friendly helpers” who assist with short-term tasks; and music programs including concerts in assisted living facilities and on local public television.
