Who is One America? It is an organization that advances the fundamental principles of democracy and justice at the local, state, and national levels by building power within immigrant communities in collaboration with key allies.

I first learned about One America nine years ago when I became their Program Officer at the Gates Foundation. They did some very impressive work in the field of education for immigrant families. They advocated successfully for dual language programs in early learning centers and schools as well as in-state tuition for recent high school graduates to attend state colleges. I was never so proud as when I watched parents with their interpreters testify in front of the Seattle School Board advocating for their children.

Over the last few years, I have become personally involved with voting rights issues. One America has been at the forefront of work in in Washington to help advocate for better representation from diverse communities to serve as elected officials in local governments  - school boards, city and county offices.

I believe America is a stronger, better, and kinder place because of the richness of our diversity. The immigrant families who came here are like many of us, they want to work hard and achieve our American Dream. This is a particularly challenging time with the COVID-19 crisis for immigrants who work in low wage jobs and do not have access to many services.
