Hi friends! I know this is a difficult time for all of us, and I'm hoping that you're in a position to open your heart (and your wallet!) to OneAmerica.
OneAmerica is the nonprofit organization where I've worked for over two years. OneAmerica works to build power in immigrant and refugee communities - the power to elect officials, advocate for legislation, and make the changes that make life better for all of us every day. I love working there because I'm surrounded by talented, passionate people advocating for their own communities.
I don't come from an immigrant or refugee background, so you may wonder why OneAmerica's so important to me. But it probably won't surprise you if I tell you that all of our struggles are connected. As someone with a disability, I am connected to immigrants affected by the "public charge" rule, which keeps from citizenship immigrants who might need disability support. As a bisexual, I am connected to refugees who have to "prove" their bisexuality to immigration judges who don't understand multi-gender attraction (this has been known to involve sex tapes!) before they can be considered for refuge based on sexual orientation discrimination. These people are some of the most marginalized members of my communities, and they're members of the communities that OneAmerica serves.
Please, if you can, contribute to OneAmerica. Our communities are facing additional need right now because marginalized folks are some of the most affected by COVID19. Our leaders are everywhere, working in essential positions and not getting paid what they deserve for putting their health at risk, or laid off from jobs that can't be performed right now, without real labor protections. Our families have multiple children at home but lack the technology to connect them with their schools. At OneAmerica, we can help connect our leaders with resources and work with them to advocate in congress for their needs. But we need your help! Please give to OneAmerica today.
Love,
Lori
