Hi, I am Emily Zurita and I am a daughter of immigrants and I am OneAmerica volunteer. I’m a student in 10th grade attending Henrietta Lacks Health and Bioscience High School. 

Having immigrant parents has impacted me a lot. 

When I was small, my mother was detained and sent to a detention center. During the period of time that I could not see her, I felt sad and lonely and I missed her very much. My family managed to get her out and we were able to be reunited again. Because of that. Since then, I have been involved with OneAmerica and I am glad that I am able to fight for the rights of immigrants.

I was five years old when I started going to OneAmerica community meetings to be a helper, signing people up and handing out flyers. And now in the past election, I have trained community members on how to do phone banks and how to have deep canvassing conversations. 

I did that and I will keep on going because I would like to see reform, where people without a status won’t have a fear of being treated badly. Where they don’t have a fear of being sent back to their own countries.I would like to see a future where immigrants will be sure of having a pathway to citizenship, one that doesn’t take 10, 20 years to achieve. I would like to see people like us in positions of power.
