As a 12 year old boy scout, I was introduced to golf by my Scout Leader. My best friend and I found some used golf clubs at a yard sale in 1981. We begged his mom to take us to Pinecrest Golf Course in Virgina. As a young boy, I exceled in basketball, baseball and football, etc. Try as I might, I didn't hit a golf shot until the final hole. The ball actually took flight, hit a tree and went 30 yards behind me. I was forever hooked on this great sport.
At Dematha High School, I attempted to introduce the sport to my peers - namely football and basketball teammates. At the time there were few if any takers. However, now I play regularly with my classmates from the Class of 1987.
The sentiment is the same from each of us. We wish we had been introduced to this wonderful sport just as we were with baseball, basketball and football.
I was so fortunate to have a Scout Leader (shout out to Mr. Fred Crook) who took the time to share the game with me.
Now after a lifetime of playing golf (including two hole in ones) and learning so many life lessons, the best tribute is to pay it forward by inspiring tomorrow's leaders!
If you love the game and your community - by all means make a dontation!
