ACM Awards

The ACM Awards feature two prestigious accolades: the Make Better Happen award and the ACM of the Year award. The Make Better Happen award recognizes an exceptional Corps member from each of our eight school teams, highlighting their outstanding contributions. The ACM of the Year award pays tribute to the top AmeriCorps member of our 2022-23 class.

Keynote Speaker | Jalen McKee-Rodriguez

Jalen McKee-Rodriguez was elected to serve City of San Antonio, District 2, City Council. He serves as a fierce advocate for equitable investment in our City’s infrastructure, increased focus on the social determinants of health, accountability and transparency in City operations, and the re-imagination of public safety to prevent crime. 

Jalen moved to San Antonio to attend the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he earned a B.A. in Communication, followed by an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. During his time at UTSA, he served as President of Omega Delta Phi, Executive Director of the Council of Student Organizations, President of the Multicultural Greek Council, and performed as Rowdy the Roadrunner.

Following his collegiate career, he served full-time as an AmeriCorps member with City Year at Davis Middle School before becoming a math teacher at Sam Houston High School and, later, Madison High School. As a coucilmen, he has successfully advocated for a change to the City’s Equity Lens for infrastructure funding, a Civil Rights Coordinator in the department of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and funding for Home Repair and Housing Assistance programs. 

Jalen and his husband Nathan married in April of 2018. They have two cats and a dog: Cairo, Rome, and London. 

Andrea "Vocab" Sanderson

Andrea Sanderson performs as “Vocab” in her hometown of San Antonio, Texas. Her poetry is published in, The Texas Observer, January 2016 Issue, Pariah Anthology SFA Press, March 2016, and Sycorax’s Daughters, Cedar Grove Publishing, January 2017, Soundbite Vol. 3, Anti-Languorous Project, Spring 2019. Her debut book entitled: She Lives In Music, published on Flower Song Press, was released on Valentine’s Day 2020. Her album She Tastes Like Music, is available on all music streaming platforms.

She received awards, Performer of the Year, Influencer of the Year, from Project Forward, and Dream Voice, from the Dream Week Commission. Sanderson is the winner of the 2019 People’s Choice Award, awarded by Luminaria Artist Foundation (formerly known as: Artist Foundation of San Antonio).In May of 2020 she was awarded Best Live Entertainment/Band Musician of the Year by the SEA Awards.
