This year for Women in Construction Week, the NAWIC Greater Orlando Chapter 73 will be doing a Women Build with Habitat for Humanity of Seminole County & Greater Apopka to benefit our very own NAWIC Sister, Mary Hawkins. Mary Hawkins is an exceptional role model for women in the construction industry everywhere! As a single mother wanting to change the course of her own life and her children’s life, she enrolled in a plumbing apprenticeship program back in 2019. Working hard within the program and at S. I. Goldman Company Inc./CSUSA, she has won numerous accolades along the way, including the iBuild Central Florida Frank Bracco Grant and the NAWIC Women In Construction Award. When she was accepted into the Habitat’s Homebuyers Program, she explained that she didn’t just want to buy the house but that her lifelong dream has been to build it. She is not only set to help with the construction of her own house but has been working on and installing plumbing in numerous other houses for Habitat. as well! Mary had this to say about the whole situation, “Words can’t describe how I feel,” she says. “I’m excited to have Women Build constructing my house because I’m a WOMAN IN CONSTRUCTION! That’s what we women stand for – we’re VERY powerful!” This May Mary will not only be graduating from the Plumbing Industry Professional Education apprenticeship program as a Journeyperson Plumber, but she will also be receiving the keys to her new home.
