On January 28, 2015, Alex's brother Tony, his wife Alexandra and proud sister Ruby, welcomed a beautiful baby girl named Vera Lorraine. We were so excited to meet our new little niece! When we arrived at the hospital and met her for the first time, she looked like a perfectly beautiful, healthy baby girl, but we knew that she had a long, tough road ahead of her.

During Alexandra’s 20 week ultrasound, the technician informed them that something was not quite right with their baby's heart. Additional information revealed that their baby girl had a condition called TGA or transposition of the great arteries. She would need to have open heart surgery, but it could be fixed. Over the next several months, Tony and Alexandra began preparing for their daughter’s birth and surgery with the Children’s Heart Clinic, Children’s Hospital and the Mother and Baby Center. Even though they were scared and worried about the road ahead, after meeting with the team at Children’s, they knew that she would be in the best hands.

On February 2nd, under the care of the skilled medical staff and a lot prayers, Vera underwent open heart surgery to correct the TGA. Not only was her surgery extremely successful, but she went home just 6 days later!

Vera means faith in Russian. We had faith in her strength, faith in her heart, and faith in the doctor's who fixed her heart, and who will continue to help her heart heal and grow.

The Heartbeat 5000 Race raises funds to support the cardiovascular program at Children’s, which serves roughly 55% of patients needing cardiovascular surgeries in the metro area. Please consider supporting the children and families that are in need of cardiovascular care and donate to this amazing cause.
